ALPACAS ARE EARTH FRIENDLY ANIMALS
Alpacas are one of Mother Nature's favorite farm animals. They are sensitive to their environment in every respect. The following physical attributes allow Alpacas to maintain their harmony with Mother Earth:
- The Alpaca's feet are padded and leave even the most delicate terrain undamaged as they graze on native grass.
- The Alpaca is a modified ruminant with three stomachs. They convert grass and hay to energy very efficiently, eating much less than most other farm animals.
- Their camelid ancestry allows them to thrive without consuming very much water.
- Alpacas are generally very gently on trees tending not to eat them or damage them
- Their dung is used for fuel in South America and gardeners find the dung rich fertilizer perfect for growing fruits and vegetables.
- Alpacas consolidate their feces in one or two spots in the pasture, thereby controlling the spread of parasites and making it easy to collect and compost for fertilizer.
- The Alpacas contribution to energy conservation is through their fibre, which can be used for various types of clothing, rugs, mats plus felting for hats and slippers.
- Alpacas are very easy to keep and require only a small amount of land and nominal maintenance. During the Canadian Winter an adult Alpaca consumes approximately only two small square bales of hay per month.
- Alpacas have a high resistance to disease and adapt well to a variety of climates.
