ALPACA FACTS
- Alpacas are members of the camelid family and are native to the high Andes Mountains of South America.
- Alpacas are a social herd animal. If separated from contact with other animals they may become sick and perish.
- Alpacas are very intelligent and curious, a trait which bonds them with their caretakers.
- Life Span: Approximately 15 - 25 years.
- Height: 34 - 38 inches at the shoulder.
- Weight: Range from 110 - 145 pounds (average).
- Gestation: 330 days on average.
- Birth: Twins are extremely rare. Single cria usually delivered during the daylight without assistance.
- Reproduction: First bred at 14 - 18 months of age. Alpacas do not have a heat cycle. Ovulation is induced and occurs 24 - 36 hours after breeding thus able to manage birthing time to your preference. Male Alpacas usually not ready for breeding until 24 - 36 months of age, on average.
- Color: Alpacas enjoy a very wide color variation consisting of 22 distinct natural colors, which can be spread out through a number of different patterns.
- Fibre: One of the worlds most desirable and elegant fibres: Fine, warm, durable, lightweight, grease-free and luxurious. Structurally different composition of hair: Hollow and somewhat tubular which may account for the remarkable warmth, strength, durability and insulating quality.
